America is a wonderful place. I am very happy I live here. But America’s justice system is as corrupt as, well, I cannot even come up with an appropriate simile. The point is, our justice system is messed up.
A man walks into an office building (the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle)holding a girl hostage at gunpoint two years ago. He makes anti-Israel and anti-semitic remarks, and then he begins shooting women. Six women. One dead.
Walk up to any (and by any I mean the average) person and read the above paragraph to him. Then ask him if he thinks the man is guilty of murder and attempted murder, in addition to racism. I’m pretty confident the average person would say, “Obviously he’s guilty of murder and the other charges.”
But not when his brilliant defense attorney pulls out theĀ classic”not guilty by reason of insanity” plea. I’ve watched my fair share of “Law and Order.” Most of the time, an insanity plea is used in situations where the evidence against the suspect is so mountainous there is no way they can deny he did the actions he is being charged for. It’s an escape attempt. It’s almost a get-out-of-jail-free card.
“Oh, your Honor, he’s insane. He didn’t realize he was saying racist things and shooting women. He thought he was playing a video game.” to which our totally unbiased (yeah, right) Judge replies, “You know what? You’re right. Let’s place him in a mental institution until he is declared mentally fit to return to society.”
Then after 2-3 months of “recovery” he is back living at his own house with nothing but a slap on the wrist, if that.
50-60 years ago, this man would be guilty after one day in deliberation between the jurors. Can you believe the jurors in this case were deadlocked for eight days? Eight days! For eight days half of the jury was swayed by the lawyer’s witty insanity plea. “Oh you know he does seem kinda crazy with his hair messed up and his clothes wrinkled and his thick glasses.” My goodness. People are so naive.
Yes, I know, I’m speculating some of these things because I was not actually at the trial or in the jury chambers. But really it couldn’t have been much different than that.
I just find it amazing how far the justice system has come. Not only in this case but in general. We kill babies because since they aren’t outside of the womb, they’re just fetuses. What kind of sick people think that’s okay?
If you think abortion is okay and the right of a woman, you’re wrong. And I will tell you that till the day I die. Who are we to say whether or not a living creature has the right to live. We are denying a human being the right to live and grow up and have its own chance at a life that would outlive us, all because we want to live the way we’re living for a few more years before settling down to start a family. Shame on us.
But I digress. That’s a discussion for another post.
